It’s nice to be pleasantly surprised by your destination when you are travelling, and Piedra del Peñol was exactly that. This was one place where natural and man-made wonders came together to create spectacular surroundings and harmony. It is one of the most worthwhile daytrips you can take around Medellín.

It is, by no means, on the Must-See list for tourists in Medellín. But I was fascinated enough to see where the infamous Colombian drug lord had ended up after his unparalleled life and the ensuing tragic death.

Much of the world’s cocaine is produced in Colombia. In its jungle in the north, I had an opportunity to visit a working cocaine laboratory, and get an insight into production of cocaine, and to a larger degree, its trade.

Once you’ve been there, it’s easy to see how you can ‘lose’ a city.

Here is a picture of the Peruvian hairless dog I saw in Trujillo, Peru.
I had read about them previously but I was still a bit shocked when I saw the first one. Doesn’t it look like it’s just survived an inferno or something?

This ‘naked’ dog doesn’t suffer from cold for it lives in Trujillo where it’s warm and dry, but it suffers from premature ageing on its forehead.
I was soon fond of this gentle friendly creature happily running around at the Huaca Arco Iris ruin, which is one of several interesting archaeological sites (e.g. Chan Chan) in the area from the Chimu and Moche civilisations.

Here’s a sight some of you might be horrified at. I certainly hadn’t seen a camel’s head hanging at the butcher shop before.
It has a Mona Lisa-ish expression that is very difficult to decipher.
This picture was taken at a market stall in Meknès, Morocco.
And if you thought coming face to face with the animal you were about to devour for lunch was bad, it’s quite normal to leave meat outside without refrigeration for hours on end at these markets.
Bon appétit!
